What Do Grade A, B and C Used Golf Balls Mean?
Share
If you're new to buying used golf balls, you've probably noticed they come in different grades — A, B, and C. But what do those grades actually mean, and does it really matter which one you choose?
At Foreshank, we grade every ball we sell so you know exactly what you're getting before it arrives. Here's a straightforward breakdown.
Grade A — Near Mint
Grade A balls are in near-mint condition. They've been played, but you'd struggle to tell. Expect:
- No cuts, scuffs, or damage
- No logos, personalisation, or pen marks
- Minimal paint wear — the ball looks almost new
- Full performance — identical to a new ball on the course
Grade A is the right choice if you're playing competitive golf, want tour-level performance, or simply don't want to compromise on feel and spin. For premium balls like the Titleist Pro V1, Callaway Chrome Soft, or TaylorMade TP5, Grade A gives you everything the ball was designed to deliver.
Grade B — Good Condition
Grade B balls have visible light wear but are in perfectly playable condition. Expect:
- Minor scuffs or light paint fading
- Possibly a small logo or stamp (e.g. a range logo or initials)
- No cuts or damage affecting performance
- Excellent value for money
Grade B is our most popular tier. For the vast majority of golfers playing weekend rounds, Grade B performs exactly like a new ball — the cosmetic marks make no difference to distance, spin, or feel. If you want a premium ball at a fraction of the price, Grade B is the sweet spot.
Grade C — Practice Grade
Grade C balls show clear signs of use — paint wear, discolouration, or visible marks. They are structurally sound with no cuts or cracks, but cosmetically they've seen some action. Expect:
- Noticeable wear or discolouration
- Possible logos or markings
- No performance-affecting damage
- Maximum value per ball
Grade C is ideal for practice rounds, the driving range, playing over water, or introducing a junior to the game. You get a genuinely good ball — often a premium model — at the lowest possible price.
Which Grade Should You Buy?
Here's a simple guide:
- Competitive or serious golf → Grade A
- Regular weekend golf → Grade B (best value)
- Practice, range, or casual play → Grade C
